The CovCath tennis program plays competitively against local and regional schools in both Varsity and JV. The program is regarded as one of the areas finest, consistently producing state-ranked tennis players. Tryouts are held in February (weather permitting) and the season runs through the end of school with the state championship in June. "Cuts" are only necessary if we need to limit the size of both the JV and Varsity rosters as directed by the head coach. We have not made cuts since we've moved onto our six-court Yung Family Tennis Complex that is located on campus.
Head Coach: Al Hertsenberg
Mr. Al Hertsenberg started his coaching career at Covington Catholic in 1991 as the head coach for the tennis team. In the many seasons as head tennis coach, his teams have won the region tournament 23 times. In 2010, 2015 and 2022, the tennis team not only won the region but also finished the state tournament in second place. In 2019, the team finished in third place in the state tournament. He has served as tennis regional tournament manager since 2003. Coach Hertsenberg is also a member of the Covington Catholic Hall of Fame, inducted in 2011. He was awarded "Tennis Coach of the Year" in Kentucky by the National Federation of High School Associations for the 2015 season. More importantly, Mr. Hertsenberg is the chairman of the religion department and currently teaches senior religion.
Assistant Coaches: Jared Haught and Austin Hussey
Jared Haught ('17) and Austin Hussey ('15) bring a wealth of energy, knowledge, and experience to the team. Jared played four years at Thomas More University. Austin played three years at the University of Kentucky and one year at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Their dedication and loyalty to the program is immeasurable.
JV Coaches: Kevin Schutte, Lacy Haught, and Fr. Michael Hennigan
Kevin Schutte played tennis at Covington Catholic for four years and has been helping coach for several years. Lacy Haught played tennis at Thomas More University and joined the staff in 2023. Fr. Hennigan has been involved for several years and officially joined the staff also in 2023.
